Brief History of Movie Music:
- In the 1900s the "silent movie era" started off movies, whereby the film had no dialogue and no synchronized recorded sound. In silent films for entertainment the dialogue is transmitted through muted gestures, mime and title cards. Synchronized dialogue was only made practical in the late 1920s with the perfection of the Audio amplifier tube. There when then the very first release of "The Jazz singer" in 1927, the "talkies", also known as sound film or talking pictures became more common and recognised.
- Moving on in 9115 - scores were created for existing music which then led to the 1930s-50s "movie musical era" for example "singing in the rain" starring Gene Kelly was one of the first and most popular concoction of movie and musical numbers know for it's scene featuring the song "singing in the rain" itself.
- Moving on from this in the 1960s the use of popular soundtracks in movies became the new trend. For example "Hard day's night" included tracks from The Beatles and others to promote soundtrack sales. This form of advertising proved useful in representing both products equally. This was also used for the film "The Graduate" starring Simon Garfunkel's soundtrack.
Then in the 70s-80s it became a big thing to be creating big musical scores to fit characters for example in the big hit movie "Jaws".
