Evaluation Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

What have you learned from Audience Feedback?

Target Audience: 15-22 roughly & ABC1 demographics

My feedback regarding the ancillary Texts and The music video were mainly positive and I referred to some of the feedback within my music video analysis previously. I found there were a few things that I would definitely change for next time to improve the media product to appeal to my target audience better.  When conducting my research to get feedback from audiences  I used Social media such as Facebook to post and promote my music video as well as conduct feedback from it by connecting a link to a survey I had created online using Survey Monkey. I found that this was an easier way to getting a better range of feedback as it reached a lot more people without a lot of effort on my part.

When I posted my YouTube video link onto Facebook along with the survey link, a couple of people had shared my post. Which meant that even more people saw the video and gave feedback in some form or another which helped me to analyse and critic my own work and see what I needed to improve. Here were a few of the responses:

I found from these the key elements that stood out to my target audience. The most common responses revolved around the editing of the video and the appearance of the female artist.

I learned from this that I need to make the sounds effect more prominent against the original sound track. A lot of responses referred to the crash being exciting and "unexpected" although they were aware something was going to happen due to the speed of editing and the associations of irresponsible drinking in the car.

I learned from this that my target audience thought the representation of the artist reflect her style of POP genre well and linked well to the promotion of key themes in the video narrative concept.

I also did this form of Feedback for my Magazine advert and Digipak Using Survey Monkey:

Overall my feedback was positive and made me more aware of the key elements of the magazine advert, digipak  and music video that stood out to my target audience and what parts may have connected better to older audiences due to the circumstances and situation of alcohol abuse in the video being more culturally aware in older audiences (22+)

Evaluation Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Ancillary Texts:

Comparison/analysis of Texts relating to Conventions and Use of Synergy

  • The combination of the products is very strong as it reflects key themes associated with the song and the artist. Using the different angled photography it makes the audience see the artist as more exposed and recognised by her body language and dominant colour scheme that makes the artist's image prominent.

Evaluation question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Ancillary texts:

Magazine Advert:

Digipak Back Cover:

Magazine Shock Advert:

Development of Conventions:

In terms of Conventions I made sure I consistently referred back to pre-existing examples of ancillary texts and examples relating to my chosen genre of POP.  I believe I challenged a lot of the conventions relating to POP as widely recognised my video and ancillary texts to be of Indie POP genre. However many disagreed and said that it just reflect a more emotional POP artist and still related to POP genre conventions.
I believe my Digipak and Magazine advert develop the sense of conventions by challenging conventions, but in appropriate way to reflect the meaning of the song.

My own Digipak Analysis:

Through out all of the images the artist's make up, style, clothing, body expressions, red themed attire and many more are all associated among all of the texts creating synergy and the artist's own brand as a whole. I wanted the alcohol and emotion state of the artist to be identified as a key theme within the digipak and magazine adverts to promote a more associated with.

Final Music Video - Poison by Ivy Taylor

Final Version Of Music Video Poison by Ivy Taylor:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNblpsCtOvI - Music Video

Music Video Analysis:

Camera Shots, Movement, Editing, Post-production Digital Effects and Mise- en - Scene:

  • Subjective filming runs throughout shots where the "poison" known to us as the alcohol is present and shown with distorted filters that suggest she is seeing the alcohol through drunken or misguided state of mind at the time.

  • Point of view shots show the artist's view and experience for example when she sees the alcohol and reaches for it.

  • Establishing shots at the beginning of the narrative and portray the main focus of the video around alcohol and her decision between being sober or drinking and how two sides of her story  could end by the choice of drink.
  • Hand held camera movement to replicate distorted and intoxicated state of mind.

  • Pan shots used to convey space and area around artist as well as creating consistency within the narrative in terms of editing.

  • Use of high key and low key lighting to illuminate areas at which are seen as key parts of the illusion/state at which she is seen as intoxicated. Low key lighting reflects the morbid and depressing effect after the car crash to convey serious emotion and depth to the audience.

  • Baggy clothing and limited make -up at start of video to symbolise her natural state before being intoxicated or being sober, it also reflects her struggling mind-set as what se is wearing appears messy and not together.

  • Heavy make - up and dark/stylish clothing represents the artist in her desired state or improved state as the video is about revealing her past but coming out of her issues stronger, this idea is then reflected in the way she is dressed in terms of dark make up indicating her complexity.

  • Running make up and dark clothing wore after car crash makes the artist look more damaged and creates sympathy within the audience as well as concern for her well being and makes the over all tone of the video for serious towards the middle to end sections.

Final Designs for Magazine Advert

My final magazine advert design:

I kept the ongoing theme of black and red to create a more edgy atmosphere to her star persona. My audience feedback commented  on the artist's body language and how it related well to the music genre and the synergy of the song.

My Final Design for my Shock Advert:

I used this as my shock magazine advert in the campaign of revealing my artist's secrets and past that she presents in the song itself and the album's approach.

Final Designs for Digipak

Final Design for Digipak:

As my final design I thought this came across as more striking and more mysterious in terms of the artist's persona and body language. I changed the background text font to match the magazine advert's in terms of synergy and identity of the artist. I liked the style of the layout in terms of surrounding the artist in text highlight and single her out representing deeper meaning towards the artist's past and background.

Audience responses to the finished cover:
"The colours are vibrant and act as striking" - Emily (17yrs)

"The artist has sexual appeal as well as appearing very mysterious" - James (21)

"The text surrounding the artist makes everything stand out" - Natalie (18)

" The bold writing ties the whole image together and makes it stand out" - Joshua (20)

The Back cover design:

The Inside Sleeve and CD Design:
First Design:

I decided not use this as my inside cover as it didn't correlate well with the rest of my ancillary texts. I therefore went for something more symbolic of the artist and the meaning behind the song.

Second and Final Design:

I wanted the inside sleeve to reflect her mental state and implicate those features to her target audience. The symbolism behind the overlay is that the alcohol is embedded in her mind and reflects her mental struggle to over come it.

CD Design - Final Design:

I incorporated the smoke style design on the CD to further promote the idea of intoxication and the representation of it fluidly taking over.

Final Digipak Design:

I decided to use the ivy background photography as the CD design and inside sleeve design as I felt it was symbolic of not only the artist, further promoting her past identity. But also promotes symbolically her inner self and the reveal of her true identity to the audience. I believe the synergy between the style and replication of texts and colour scheme. I believe the black and white gradient reflects a very "made up" and media constructed design, which contrasts with the more natural and exposed setting of the inside sleeve and CD design.

Ancillary Text - Magazine and Digipak Design and Product Research

Final Photography images for Magazine Advert and Digipak:

Looking at other pop - genre Digipaks and Magazine adverts for inspiration : Mood Board

I wanted to replicate a simple yet impacting Digipak and have  bold titles to reflect the POP genre style. I decided to incorporate the colour scheme of Red, Black and White into my Digipak and Magazine advert. I also wanted to explore the style of 'Shock advertising' by creating a shock magazine advert as well as a regular advert to expand the relevance of the lyric's impact and the artist's persona.

Keeping to Conventions:

  • Using bold complementary colours to amplify the appearance of the ancillary text
  • Using a dominant image to portray the artist
  • Prominent text of artist's  name and name of album

Font Ideas for Magazine Advert:

This font style (AR bonnie)
makes the artist's name stand out and although looks straight and professional has some slight quirk or strangeness to it which reflects the artist's natural personality and will be reflected and associated with the artist in this way. I then wanted to make the other additional titles stand out in a slightly more official way, by incorporating the black background against the red writing gives the title greater impact and makes it easier to read.

I looked at other font's to get a title that I could easily replicate and portray as symbolic for the artist in both the Digipak and magazine advert to promote the synergy between them. I then came to the conclusion to use the following font after conducting audience research into what styles and preferences they had against my suggestions.

1-4 designs starting from top to bottom

Audience Feedback on title designs:

Draft edits:

I decided to change the layout of  the titles and limited the amount of different fonts to give the advert a more uniform style. As well as making it easier for the reader to view.

Audience Feedback for my magazine advert:

This feedback helped me to identify my strong points of the magazine advert as well as things that were not praised and how to improve them.

Most of the feedback was positive and I took into consideration any criticisms to relate my product to POP conventions in a better way.

This feedback showed me that I was portraying my artist in the right way to be recognised and compared to POP conventions.

Digipak Design Ideas and Audience Feedback:

Idea 1
I decided from this did not fit my artist's image as well it does not convey the edge and darkened approach I wished to portray regarding the artist's past and back ground. I liked the use of font as the background and the overlay of the artist's image on top covering the text. Where as I didn't like the main title of The artist's name "Ivy Taylor" I felt the font choice was too obvious and stood out in a bad way against the dominant image of the artist herself. During my focus group others agreed with the notion I had against the artist's name.

Development from my first design...

Developing from my initial idea I changed the font of the Artist's name completely as I felt the style was too quaint and didn't reveal and more edgy and side to the artist's persona and troubled past as a serious issue. I then wasn't too happy with the body language of the artist although her image and style is reflected well and represents a more edgy side to her. I thought I would then incorporate my original idea of the "intoxicated" text as the background  but change the image to make her image more striking and portray deeper meaning relating to her past alcohol consumption problems.
